3rd wave end signal, Center asks states to light additional curbs

Coronavirus Omicron News Live Updates: India reported a slight increase in new cases and deaths, with 30,757 new cases of Covid-19 and 541 deaths in the past 24 hours, ending at 8am on Thursday. With this, the number of active cases now stands at 3,32,918, while the death toll has risen to 5,10,413.

With all the indicators pointing to a steady return to the situation that prevailed two months ago, the Ministry of Health on Wednesday ordered states to relax or even abolish the additional restrictive measures imposed to deal with the third wave of the pandemic. In a letter to chief secretaries in states, Health Minister Rajesh Bhushan said it is important that the movement of people and economic activities do not now remain under the same level of restrictions.

Several states have already begun easing Covid restrictions: After a nearly two-year lull, University of Delhi’s North Campus and the student hubs around it are bustling with life again as colleges prepare to open to offline from Thursday classes. Haryana’s government lifted all Covid-related restrictions in the state on Wednesday, officials told PTI. Meanwhile, the state government in Uttarakhand lifted the curfew after more than a month and a half and allowed several other economic activities to fully resume following a decline in daily Covid cases. The government of Punjab has ordered all schools to reopen for kindergarten through 12th grade students.
