Angel Di Maria will leave Juventus on a free transfer this summer because the winger does not renew his contract with the club.
- Argentina’s contract expires in the summer
- Winger is not signing a new contract
- Hopes to stay in Europe
WHAT HAPPENED? Di Maria joined Juve last summer on a one-year contract and there was talk of a possible extension, although the Argentina international said in February that he had not spoken to the club about it. GOAL can confirm that Juve’s transfer strategy has changed and they have decided to take a different path, one that does not involve Di Maria.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: Di Maria made 38 appearances in all competitions for Juve, but started 25 times due to his inconsistency in what was a hectic season for the club.
Turin was initially given a 15-point deduction in Serie A for a capital gains scandal, although the penalty was reduced to 10 points this week. This could leave them without a place in the Champions League next season, which will be a major financial blow to the club.
AND WHAT’S MORE: The next step of the 35-year-old has not yet been decided. While he has always been linked with a return to Argentina to join Rosario Central, his priority is to stay in Europe to boost his hopes of playing in the next Copa America in 2024.
