FIFA is considering changing the offside rule for Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League – Football.London
A major change to the offside rule, advocated by former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, could soon be implemented in the Premier League.
There has been a plethora of controversy over offside decisions in the Premier League in recent seasons, with millimeters and toes classed as offside as VAR drew lines before those strict rules were relaxed slightly.
The drawn lines were then made thicker to give attackers a little more advantage, although controversy remained high. However, Wenger’s proposed rule change would be a huge boost for attacking players.
The current rules state that a player is offside when any part of the body is closer to the opponent’s goal line than both the ball and the penultimate opponent.
However, Wenger, FIFA’s head of global football development, wants to make further changes to the offside rule. Wenger wants to change which part of the body is used to decide offside, although previous proposals from him have drawn much criticism.
Wenger has proposed that the player’s entire scoring body must be offisde for the flag to go up. This would mean that if a scoring part of the body is behind the last defender, the attacker remains offside.
This would have a huge advantage for forwards and see teams change the way they play the high line, with almost all goals in last season’s campaign ruled offside by VAR likely to be allowed under the new to suggest.
However, it may be some time before this takes effect in England. The rule change will be implemented for the first time in a trial period in the Netherlands, Sweden and Italy.
If successful, it could be rolled out globally.
