Inter Milan vs AC Milan: Champions League Semifinal Preview – Al Jazeera English

AC Milan are 2-0 behind their city rivals going into the second leg of the Champions League semi-final.

When: Tuesday May 16
Where: San Siro stadium, Milan, Italy
Kick-off: 19:00 GMT

AC Milan face a tough task to overcome a two-goal deficit against Inter Milan in the second leg of their cross-city Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night, even though the Rossoneri are on the verge of returning star player Rafael Leao welcome after an injury.

Inter Milan secured a 2-0 win as they dominated the entire Serie A game last week and will have the vast majority of fans for their ‘home’ football match at their shared San Siro stadium.

The winner will face Manchester City or defending champions Real Madrid in the final in Istanbul, Turkey, on June 10. City will face Madrid in their second leg in Manchester on Wednesday, following a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu.

Although Milan and Inter have been crowned European champions 10 times together, this year will see a side from Milan for the first time in 13 years and the first Italian team to reach the final since Jose Mourinho’s Inter won the trophy in 2010.

Milan Skriniar is Inter’s only major absence due to injury.

Intercoach Simone Inzaghi rested key players Lautaro Martinez, Alessandro Bastoni and Hakan Calhanoglu over the weekend.

Leao missed out with a right thigh problem as Milan lost the opening game, but he seems determined to return.

“If today’s training goes well, Leao will start,” said Milan coach Stefano Pioli on Monday.

Leao was named Serie A’s Most Valuable Player when Milan won the Italian League last year. He also played an important role when Milan knocked out Napoli in the quarter-finals.

Rade Krunic and Junior Messias sat out the final game, but Pioli said he “hoped” they would return.

Algerian international midfielder Ismael Bennacer has been ruled out for Milan after being injured in the first leg.

Head to head

The two sides have met 236 times in all competitions, of which Inter Milan have won 88. AC Milan achieved 79 wins, while 69 games ended in a draw.
