Isaac makes the move to fellow club in the Champions League – Newcastle United

Isaac Westendorf has joined NIFL Irish Premiership champions Larne following his summer departure from Newcastle United.

The 22-year-old spent 18 months at St James’ Park but was not offered a new contract this summer and has now joined the County Antrim team, subject to international approval.

Born in Germany to Ghanaian parents, Westendorf moved to England at the age of 13 and joined the Magpies on a successful trial after impressing with non-league Barking.

Larne won the title for the first time in their history last season and will therefore appear in the qualifying phase of the Champions League. They will face HJK Helsinki over two stages later this month.

Westendorf told his new club’s official website: “IIt feels good to be here and I’m happy that everything has been arranged and signed.

“I’ve had a good time at Newcastle, gained a lot of experience training with the first team and now I want to push myself in men’s football, so that’s something important for me.

“Everyone dreams of playing in the Champions League. It’s a big thing for the club and I’m excited to be a big part of it against Helsinki.

“I had offers from elsewhere but the offer was there to come here and I’m glad I did because I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”

Should Larne beat their Finnish opponents, Norwegian champion Molde FK awaits in the second qualifying round. If they are eliminated, they will fall into the second round of the Europa League qualifying stage.

Larne manager Tiernan Lynch added: “We are delighted to add Isaac to our squad.

“He’s been here for the last few weeks and it’s given us both a chance to get a good look at each other and we were just as keen to get him here as he was to join the club.

“He comes from a top environment in England and he is now ready to push himself to be a success in the men’s game and we will work with him to help him achieve this.”
