John Barnes gives advice to Declan Rice on move to Arsenal or Man City – Metro.co.uk
John Barnes has explained why he thinks Declan Rice should prioritize a move to Arsenal over Manchester City.
West Ham captain Rice has emerged as a prime target for both Arsenal and Man City this summer, while Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola look to bolster their midfield options.
Arsenal were thought to be leading the race to sign Rice, but multiple failed bids have given Manchester City hopes of securing the 24-year-old’s signature.
Going to the Etihad Stadium will see Rice join a Man City side that won a stunning treble last season and work with one of the greatest managers in Guardiola history.
But a move to north London also has its benefits, as Rice will join a team that was vying for the Premier League title last season and has been tipped as future Arsenal captain.
“Arsenal have made two bids, probably up to £100 million, so Arsenal makes more sense,” said former England star Barnes. futfanatico.com.
“Not because they are better than Manchester City, but because Arsenal are more interested and I think he wants to go to Arsenal. That will be the best for him.
“Rice will fit into Arsenal’s way of playing in that defensive midfield role. £100 million for Rice means he goes straight to that Arsenal team as a defensive midfielder.
“Protecting those back four and bringing strength is what the Arsenal team needs.
“I don’t think Manchester City are that interested in Declan Rice because they have Rodri. And I don’t think Pep wants two defensive midfielders.’
While West Ham is ready to sell Rice, they are waiting for a bid worth £100 million. Rice has played 245 games for the Hammers and 43 for England.
