Lionel Messi wins Champions League Goal of the Season award for curler vs Benfica – India Today

By India Today Sports Desk: Former Paris Saint-Germain striker Lionel Messi has won the Champions League goal of the season. Messi’s curling attack against Benfica, which included some wonderful play between other PSG players, beat some great strikes from Erling Haaland and Alejandro Grimaldo to win the award.

Messi, who did not renew his contract with PSG and left Europe for the first time in his career, is about to join Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. Messi’s move to the United States of America comes after the legendary player was unable to return to his boyhood club FC Barcelona.

Messi’s career came to an abrupt end at Paris Saint-Germain – a two-year spell in which PSG failed to secure a Champions League trophy despite assembling an attack line of Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbabbe – affectionately dubbed Eminem. The PSG Ultras turned against Lionel Messi after the team was knocked out of the Champions League without reaching the semi-finals of the tournament. The group of ultras chanted outside Messi’s house and even chased the player out of the stadium.

Things took a turn for the worse after the club sanctioned Lionel Messi for his unsanctioned visit to Saudi Arabia later in the season – for which Messi released a public apology video. The Argentine World Cup winner announced his departure from European football via an interview and said publicly that he could not afford another departure from FC Barcelona due to financial problems.

Messi will reunite with former Barcelona player Sergio Busquets in the MLS and will play under the guidance of former Argentina and Barcelona coach Gerard Tata Martino.
