    The central government on Friday refuted media reports that claimed there had been a “significant undercount” of COVID-19 deaths in India’s first two waves, saying they were unfounded, misleading and misinformed.

    “It is clarified that such media reports are misleading and misinformed. They are not based on fact and are mischievous in nature. India has a very robust system of birth and death reporting which is based on statute and regularly conducted from the Gram Panchayat level to the district level and the state level. The whole exercise is being conducted under the overall supervision of the Registrar General of India (RGI),” the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.
