Liverpool should sign 13-assist free transfer as ex-Barcelona playmaker perfect for Jurgen Klopp - Liverpool.com

Despite Jurgen Klopp’s men fought in every competition until the last minute last year, Liverpool are now ineligible for any silverware and could still miss out on the Champions League places.

A difficult season has clearly taken its toll on a team that has not been filled to the desired quality level. Injuries have left Liverpool in tatters this year with teenagers like Fabio Carvalho And Stefan Bajcetic have to fill gaps without any Premier League experience.

Liverpool fans often look enviously at the benches of Manchester City or Chelsea, which are full of world-class signings and talent. If Klopp wants to compete on all fronts, he needs a side that can do it all.

One player who has not only proven to be a top player, but also a potentially cost-effective option for the summer is Benfica’s Álex Grimaldo. The left-back is available on a free transfer this summer, which is always a plus when working within FSG’s strict financial constraints.

Grimaldo joined Barcelona’s prestigious youth system, La Masia, in 2008 and has since honed his skills as a defender with the Barcelona B team until 2015, where he played for just $1.29M (£1.06M/€1.2M).

The Spaniard has proven to be a bargain for Benfica, as he made 42 appearances for the club this season, scoring five goals and providing a whopping 13 assists. This is a great achievement compared to Andy Robertson, who scored zero and made just six assists in the league, albeit in an often struggling team.

The 27-year-old has an innate ability to fire accurate passes down the pitch to help his team counter-attack, which is a rare skill and only seen in players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose passing helped Liverpool win every possible trophy to win.

Grimaldo will certainly be looking for his fourth league title with the Eagles this season as they top the Liga Portugal by a whopping eight points. The left back has been crucial to this lead for Benfica, just like how Darwin Nunez was for them last season.

While a left-back is hardly a priority this season, Grimaldo is currently out of contract at the end of the season and would be available on a free transfer.

To compete on all fronts as a world-class team, you need a world-class team that covers all bases. Top clubs have replacements lined up in every position and Grimaldo should be an option Liverpool are considering.
