Merson tells Arsenal to sign Lukaku in bid to score more ‘scrappy…’ – Evening Standard

The former Gunners midfielder has expressed his belief that Mikel Arteta’s “naked” team needs a new striker, having just missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City.

One player who can add an extra element to Arsenal’s game is Lukaku, Merson said, following a loan spell at Inter that saw him score 13 goals and help the Italians reach the Champions League final.

The 30-year-old is due to return to Chelsea in the summer in a bid to prove himself to Mauricio Pochettino, but could still be available after his £97.5m move two years ago.

Merson told Give Me Sport that there are a small pool of players available for Arsenal this summer, saying: “Ivan Toney would have adapted to Arsenal but that won’t happen now due to his ban.

“Romelu Lukaku could be available. The 30-year-old is a die-hard center forward. He will stay front and back on the players. That could help Arsenal.

“They can’t be predictable. Every goal they score is a ‘good’ goal. They need to be able to score rudimentary goals.

“Ollie Watkins I don’t see myself scoring 25 goals a season. Unai Emery has made him a better player but I don’t think he has quality. If Arsenal bought him and left and only managed ten goals next season, you wouldn’t be surprised.

“They looked at Dominic Calvert-Lewin before. Would it be right for them after the season he’s had? Probably not.”
