Live news updates: Lata Mangeshkar, a singer who defined music and melody for generations, has passed away, her younger sister said Sunday.

She was 92 and is survived by her four siblings. Mangeshkar was hospitalized on January 11 after she was discovered with Covid-19. “She is no more. She died in the morning,” Usha Mangeshkar, the singer’s younger sister, told PTI.

“I am terrified of words,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter.

“The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our country that cannot be filled. Generations to come will remember her as a faithful man of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to to enchant people.”

Mangeshkar started singing in her teens and has sung more than 15,000 songs in 36 languages ​​in a career spanning 73 years. Other Bollywood personalities and politicians offered comfort.
