Report: Thomas Tuchel wants Bayern Munich to sign Kalvin Phillips – Bavarian Football Works from Manchester City
Bayern Munich look set to set the transfer market on fire with shadow ninja-style recruiting. It still feels like Brazzo-level cooking, with all those exciting transfer rumors floating around. Was Bayern Munich’s strong interest in Declan Rice just a smokescreen for what is their hunt for the actual prize – Kalvin Phillips?
With Arsenal all but sealing the deal for Rice, Bayern Munich have shifted their sights to the same island. Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips may not have the incredible hitting range or explosiveness of the West Ham superstar, but he makes up for it with his insane work-rate and determination in defence. And Thomas Tuchel, who suddenly has a lot to say about the composition of the team, may want to drop in and seal this transfer.
Phillips is 27. in the prime of his career and nothing more than a bench warmer for Manchester City. Being criminally underused in the most stacked club in the world hardly does his abilities justice. A club like Bayern Munich would give him a great opportunity for some silverware and allow him to play a key role in the club’s successes. However, there may be one problem: Bayern’s own depth in midfield.
With Konrad Laimer having just signed another defensive workhorse in midfield, Bayern Munich are already in those positions. Even if the club manages to sell both Marcel Sabitzer and Ryan Gravenberch, Phillips would have to face Leon Goretzka and Konrad Laimer for minutes as Joshua Kimmich always starts. Isn’t this just a lateral move for the player?
Then there is the small question of the transfer fee. Manchester City are known for milking money from player sales. Will the player be available for just under 25 million? Highly unlikely. Are Bayern ready to pour money into Manchester City’s 5th-choice midfielder, taking on the likes of Manchester United and West Ham in the process? Remains to be seen.
However, there is no denying that this transfer window is one to remember.
