The England scouts are closely monitoring the progress of Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele and TEAMtalk understand Gareth Southgate is considering a shock late-career call-up one year after Euro 2024.
Steele, 32, was a revelation under Roberto De Zerbi. The stopper has ousted Spain international Robert Sanchez as Brighton’s undisputed number 1 and rewards in the international arena could await.
Indeed, Euro 2024 is just over a year away and TEAMtalk has learned that Steele will come under the watchful eye of Southgate’s England staff.
Steele previously represented England at Under-16, U17, U19 and U21. However, all hope of a senior call-up seemed lost with Steele now well into his thirties.
Steele is also eligible to play for Scotland, who are seriously considering a surprise call-up at the end of his career. But we’re told the keeper may soon get the nod from England.
Southgate is keen to make sure he has plenty of options to choose from beyond the regular trio that make up his squads.
Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope remain highly regarded at Southgate, but may soon face competition from Steele.
Man Utd’s Dean Henderson – currently on loan at Nottingham Forest – also has one eye to break into England’s Euro 2024 squad.
To do this, Henderson will have to leave Old Trafford again this summer. If retained by Erik ten Hag, he is unlikely to replace David de Gea as a regular starter.
